Talking Climate Change with Professor David Waltham - "The 100 Tonne Diet"
We're delighted to kick off our series of talks on environmental issues with Professor David Waltham speaking about climate change.
David is a Professor of Geophysics at Royal Holloway, University of London. He was one of the public speakers in the recent successful Lib Dem move to get Wiltshire Council to acknowledge the climate emergency. He is a campaigner for the Citizen's Climate Lobby and columist for Marlborough News.
The Hundred Tonne Diet
We can only release another 750 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere if we're to keep global temperature rises below 1.5 °C. That's pretty close to 100 tonnes for every man, women and child currently on the planet. Unfortunately, we each produce about 6 tonnes every year and that number is rising. The arithmetic is therefore terrifyingly simple-without a drastic greenhouse-gas weight-loss regime-we'll bust the budget in 15 years.
In this talk David will explain where these numbers come from and why it's important to keep temperature rises as low as possible. And he will explain the technical ways this might be done. That's the easy bit. The difficult bit is getting action at the necessary speed and scale. And that's about economics, politics and leadership.
There will be plenty of time for questions and discussion after the talk.
