Cllr. Martin Barrett Judges Wroughton Village Carnival

By Councillor Martin Barrett.
"Being asked to be a judge at the Wroughton Carnival came as a lovely surprise. A few years ago, I would probably have been taking part or helping out rather than judging, so it was nice to experience the event from a different point of view.
We were lucky with the weather, which made it a perfect day for everyone, whether they lived in the village or were just visiting.
Before the carnival got underway, the groups taking part in the procession gathered at the Fox and Hounds, the Carter's Rest and the White Hart. This is where the judging began.
There were so many different groups taking part, from young children and school pupils to retired people and care home residents. One group of motorcyclists had travelled all the way from Poole in Dorset, something they apparently do every year as part of their fundraising for charity.
That's one of the things that makes the carnival so special. Everyone gets involved, and it really is a true community event.
This year's parade theme was the Animal Kingdom, and the imagination on display was incredible.
Judging turned out to be much harder than I expected because everyone had put so much effort into their entries. We had to score each one on three things: how well it matched the theme, the effort that had gone into the costumes and displays, and the overall presentation. There were some fantastic and very creative entries, making it difficult to choose the winners.
In the float category, Ridgeway School took first place and also won Best Children's Float. Wroughton Infants School came second, with the Beavers in third place. Willow Care Home was awarded first place in the seniors' category.
It was a thoroughly enjoyable day, and it was a privilege to be asked to play a small part in such a wonderful community event."
